PAULO DANIEL SALLES RAMOS BIO

Economist

I did my first mathematical proof at the age of 9. Sadly, the theorem - stating whether the sum of two integers is even or odd - was already known to the scientific community by the time I achieved my results. Still, my third-grade teacher decided that my contribution was significant enough for our next math class. I was able to present my result to my third-grade peers, with mostly positive reactions.

More than two decades later, these are still the things I am passionate about: figuring out the "why" and "how" behind every "what", and then sharing it with others. I pursued a career in Economics so that I could apply the scientific rigor of the natural sciences to the questions of our every day lives: why do governments exist? How much credit should a bank offer you? How to crush your opponents at Monopoly?

This pursuit of answers for these questions has led me to a career that can be roughly equally divided between applied work and theoretical research. On the applied side, I worked in the development of credit risk models for banks in Brazil, and as a Controller Analyst for a large Brazilian pension fund. I have experience with programming languages used in data analysis, as well as with financial data services, like Bloomberg. On the theoretical side, my research has focused on regulation, social choice and implementation theory. In both of these career paths, good presentation skills are a must. I have experience communicating new and complex ideas, be it in a team meeting, a seminar room or a scientific conference.

I am always interested in discussing and working on topics like social choice, regulation, mechanism design and game design. If these topics also appeal to you, hit me up!
